Industry’s only*1 biaxially oriented polyester sealant film “Olyester®” adopted for Shiseido eye mask packaging

Toyobo Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce that its “Olyester®” film, the industry’s only*1 biaxially oriented polyester sealant film, has been adopted as the sealant material for the paper-based packaging of UL Firming Express Eye Mask, a cosmetic product by Shiseido Company, Limited. Shiseido, headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, selected Olyester® for its ability to reduce the adsorption of active ingredients onto the inner surface of the packaging, as well as for its eco-friendly feature of being laminable with paper.

Olyester®, produced using Toyobo’s proprietary film-forming technology, is the industry’s only biaxially oriented polyester film with a sealing function.

In addition to its excellent strength and heat resistance—both inherent properties of polyester film—the product offers a robust sealing function, making it a strong alternative to conventional sealant materials such as cast polypropylene (CPP) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). It can therefore be used as a material that serves as both the middle layer and the sealing layer.

The use of Olyester® thus helps reduce the amount of plastic used in packaging.

When laminated with paper, as in the case of the Shiseido product, it lowers the overall plastic content of the packaging material, making it easier to meet the requirements for obtaining Japan’s “Paper Mark” certification*2.

In addition, as a polyester material, Olyester® offers reduced adsorption of contents onto the sealant surface compared with general CPP and LLDPE.

This helps maintain stable concentrations of active cosmetic ingredients, contributing to improved quality control. These properties—its eco-friendliness and ability to reduce adsorption—were highly valued by Shiseido and led to Olyester® being adopted for the paper-based packaging of the eye mask product.

Under its long-term policy, Sustainable Vision 2030*3, Toyobo has set a goal of making 60% of its film products green*4 by the end of 2030. The company is committed to contributing to a sustainable society while delivering unique value through the development and expanded sales of films that combine inherent functional performance with environmental friendliness.
